Maybe The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, I Have the Right to Destroy Myself by Young-ha Kim, Everything is Illuminated by Johnathan Safran Foer, or Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie.

The 1st book is similar in terms of a contemporary coming of age story about human connection an longing.  I read somewhere that Young-ha Kim’s literary style is existentialist like Murakami’s and i guess the suicide theme is shared.  The last two is contemporary magic realist fiction.  Hope that helps!
